Do some research on use of type from a specific time period, and write about it on your blog.

For example, what was popular in typography during the Art Deco movement in the early part of the 20th century? Or how was type used in the psychedelic 1960’s & ’70’s? How did posters look in the late 1800’s? What sort of typography was used during WWII? How did type look after the GI’s returned home and started the Baby Boom, the Atomic Age and the Cold War? What did type look like when Gutenberg introduced the printing press? What did the hand-written type look like in the middle ages? What type was used in ancient Rome?

Find an era that interest you, find out if there is a style of type that is related, then research it and write about it. Show visual examples of what you are talking about. Post it to your blog and submit the link here.

I started like I do with most research at wikipedia, that led me though a few rabbit holes as always.

This is a brief history of Typography. I scanned through it and the era of the industrial revolution caught my eye.

This is an example of type from a newspaper in 1899.

There are several other examples from this same post.

This is an example of a font that became popular around that time.

Almost all typewriter font comes from this.

1) Complete two of the review questions found on pp. 269.

14. How can the tools a designer uses affect style? There is only so much style you can achieve with crayons. The same is true of different new media. Some aspects of certain styles can only be achieved when made a certain way or using certain tools.

15. Pointillism is completely made up of points of color. The whole space is taken up by the dots. There are no lines, some perceived though the use of grouping dots into shapes. The idea behind this style is that when you place small dots of differing colors next to each other when viewed from far away these dots and colors blend together.

2) Create a webpage that provides information on a specific artist or style listed on pp 264 or 265. This should not be a cut-and-paste job, but a report of your own work, so you will need to cite your sources.  It does not need to be lengthy, but it must be original, college level writing. Feel free to tell my why you are drawn to the artist or style, what you do or do not like about it. Tell me if you think this style could be useful in designing a website in the future.

3) Create a webpage about a common household item, but do it in a style from a different historical period or specific artistic style. For example, you could do a page on dog food in the renaissance, or paper towels in the old west. (These are my examples! You think of your own ideas please!)

He was wearing these ridiculous oversized women’s sunglasses.

4 What is the difference between an artist and a designer?

Purely out of my head, I would say an artist is more abstract than a designer.

Art is made for the  sake of art!

But a designer makes a design. It has purpose, it usually has function.

Art is not limited to a purpose, though it can have all of the same elements of design and often does.

Do you consider yourself either?

I would consider myself more of an artist at this stage. Though I have great ambitions of being a designer of many things. The top most being Video Games.

For me art is something of an outlet. Something you pour out and pour and pour into.

Well I thought this would be a good place to link to my deviantART account, its got a few scribbles and snapshots. Plans are established to eventually scan and upload more…

O.o pretty pictures!

Also, write me a paragraph or two about your background with visual design, art classes, design software, genetic predisposition for artistic talent, your great uncle Pablo Picasso, etc. Post answers to your blog.

Trying to decide how to make this short (tell my artistic beginings, history, and inspirations) without dishing out my whole life story. Eh, oh well here it is:

I have been pretty talented at drawing since I was young. Then, it was my only source of peer attention, being one of those smart kids who were just kinda brushed off to the side, I really enjoyed compilments I got on my life like sketches.

So it was the ego that got me into art at first. :P
Beginning/Inspiration, Check.

Lets see history/heritage? My parents are both atristically inclined so I guess I come by it honest.

My mom told me she took some art classes in high school and really enjoyed them. She regretted never doing anything with that or continuing in that. She says shes too busy now.
I have always hated regrets. Art is always on my todo list.

I took random art classes in high school too. Also some web page, comp sci, desktop publishing, and Banninger’s class. I placed in desktop at a BPA compitetion. Creative writing club!
Took an appreciating art class, poetry, Shakespeare, some Japanese, etc in college. Randomly interested I guess.

What else?
I’m really keen on color. I tend to be a perfectionist. Some times it takes me for-ever to get a project done because I am so obsessively focused on the details. Good and Bad. I’m really working on working in stages, instead of just doing what fits my fancy at the time.
Oh because I also have ADHD! (which I just decided doesn’t look right if it is not all caps) I think people with it are so much more interesting!

So I am an easily distracted, nit picky artist. Procrastination…

Oh Media!
I’m best with pencil/pen and paper at the moment. I’ve got a dinky little Wacom tablet that I do believe I can now count as proficient with. Self taught on GIMP. Testing the waters of Photoshop.

Anime! I am heavily influenced by anime and manga artistry. As thats my current style.

I’m also very moved by music.

Creative names
Advice was given to us to keep an eye out for things around us, inspiring or artistic. I happened to notice this guy’s post of his noticed creativity in the signs in his community.

I like the ’slip inn’. I love word puns.

First Post!

Ok, so I never know exactly what to post in the first blog post other than ‘Ta Da! I made a blog!’ and well I guess it makes sense to Write an Intro.

This Blog was created for my Fundamentals of Visual Literacy college class. This is supposed to be a way for us to submit assignments and otherwise communicate to the class.

I think its a really ingenious idea.

This isn’t my first blog, I have actually had several, but I’m not a frequent poster on any of them really. So it will be interesting to get the hang of continual posting and having something to post about.

I don’t think I really have to say any of this on here, but I am a fan of free flow writing and I think this is supposed to be somewhat personal so I felt like writing this out.
May be subject to change…
