Do some research on use of type from a specific time period, and write about it on your blog.

For example, what was popular in typography during the Art Deco movement in the early part of the 20th century? Or how was type used in the psychedelic 1960’s & ’70’s? How did posters look in the late 1800’s? What sort of typography was used during WWII? How did type look after the GI’s returned home and started the Baby Boom, the Atomic Age and the Cold War? What did type look like when Gutenberg introduced the printing press? What did the hand-written type look like in the middle ages? What type was used in ancient Rome?

Find an era that interest you, find out if there is a style of type that is related, then research it and write about it. Show visual examples of what you are talking about. Post it to your blog and submit the link here.

I started like I do with most research at wikipedia, that led me though a few rabbit holes as always.

This is a brief history of Typography. I scanned through it and the era of the industrial revolution caught my eye.

This is an example of type from a newspaper in 1899.

There are several other examples from this same post.

This is an example of a font that became popular around that time.

Almost all typewriter font comes from this.

1) Complete two of the review questions found on pp. 269.

14. How can the tools a designer uses affect style? There is only so much style you can achieve with crayons. The same is true of different new media. Some aspects of certain styles can only be achieved when made a certain way or using certain tools.

15. Pointillism is completely made up of points of color. The whole space is taken up by the dots. There are no lines, some perceived though the use of grouping dots into shapes. The idea behind this style is that when you place small dots of differing colors next to each other when viewed from far away these dots and colors blend together.

2) Create a webpage that provides information on a specific artist or style listed on pp 264 or 265. This should not be a cut-and-paste job, but a report of your own work, so you will need to cite your sources.  It does not need to be lengthy, but it must be original, college level writing. Feel free to tell my why you are drawn to the artist or style, what you do or do not like about it. Tell me if you think this style could be useful in designing a website in the future.

3) Create a webpage about a common household item, but do it in a style from a different historical period or specific artistic style. For example, you could do a page on dog food in the renaissance, or paper towels in the old west. (These are my examples! You think of your own ideas please!)

In class assignment, make an image based on our reactions to the election results yesterday and a certain art style. I attempted Dadaism. I think I need a bit more practice… :P

obama-reaction

This picture takes a bit of explaining.

I voted McCain. Even though I had already resigned to the fact that Obama was pretty much going to win.
The idea of a wasted vote is reflected in this piece.
My brother couldn’t decide who to vote for, not liking either candidate. Since he felt he was just wasting his vote on McCain, he voted for a fictional team.

Abortion, Is an issue I feel very strongly about. Based on voter records, Obama is very pro-abortion. He even voted against the treatment of babies that survived an abortion. To me that is appalling!
So I inserted a picture of a hand holding a tiny infant.
This represents how Obama is holding the fate of our children in his hands.

The black and white represent excitement for the breaking of racial barriers and also apprehention for the reaction of the world based on those issues. The placement of these colors, the half and half and the messy way the lines are drawn, indicate a confliction.

The blue in the picture represents Democratic thinking.

Create a series of three Illustrations that are original and primarily monochromatic. Select subject matter that has a unifying theme, and is meaningful to you personally.

You can design these from scratch, or start from photographs that you made yourself, and develop illustrations that use only a single base color with varying values in it. (You may add in some accents of a different color, but the primary design must be monochrome.)

You now have several computer graphic techniques under your belt. You can use any method that is pleasing to you, such as painting with Photoshop or vector drawing in Illustrator. Design these works with a minimum dimension of 350 px to a side.

Working on a not-due-right-now project instead of others that I really need to finish…because well when you have an idea or concept in your head you just have to run with it.

Unfortunately I tend to do that a lot and ignore deadlines.

Anyway, I’m working on our mono-chrome project and having difficulty using just one color. I have an awesome overall theme already picked out. And I had already decided on using a tertiary color scheme, a color for each picture. Teal(blue-green), Rose(red-violet), and sepia(yellow-orange). But I keep seeing great ideas to incorporate each color into each picture, which isn’t what were supposed to do! Even so, they look good.

I’m pretty excited about this project, because I can inject a meaning I really care about.

Mission’s Work.

In connection, a bible verse and a song. Not sure if I can actually use the song since it’s not mine, but the verse I am pretty sure isn’t confined in any copyright.

“I want to be your hands, I wanna be your feet, I will go where you send me, go where you send me…And I try, yeah I try, To touch the world like You touched my life, An I’ll find my way, To be Your hands” AudioA

“If we are the body why aren’t his arms reaching…Why aren’t His feet going?” Casting Crowns

These are modified pictures from my two mission’s trips to Helene, Honduras and Navajo Reservation, New Mexico.

<not so mono
I am also trying to decide between the two feet pictures.

Still haven’t decided on the third picture…

2. Unity in design is the use of similar elements to bring together individual objects in a piece. This can help make the product look more defined and moves the eye as the whole relates to itself.

3. An example of unity though color would be the use of pastels in a babies room or in an easter display. They may use several different colors but all are the same shade.

4. A layout is the element of space in composition. It is an arrangement of all of the objects and elements in the design. It basically maps out where everything is positioned.

5. A grid can be used to align objects in a layout. A grid helps you see even space between objects and place them accordingly.
